As the third single from their upcoming album, Dumb Luck, indie-pop band Moon Panda is head over heels for “Butterknife,” out via Virgin Music Group. The band, initially a duo between partners Maddy Myers (bass/vocals) and Gustav Moltke (guitar) before expanding into a four-piece with Josh Cabitac (drums) and George Godwin (bass/keys), is continuing their consistent streak after releasing two albums in 2022 and 2023.
With Dumb Luck, they’re zeroing in on their best traits if “Butterknife” is anything to judge by, whether it’s the velvety instrumentation or the hopelessly romantic lyrics reminiscent of bands like The Cardigans.
“‘Butterknife’ is a love song for those insecure moments in a relationship,” said Myers. “It’s reassuring that the love is still there and there was never any need to question it. It was one of those songs that just kind of happens, is completely written in like 20 minutes, and just felt right.”
At the start of the track, the smooth bass and guitar come together as if they were made of gelatin before Myers’ unapologetically gooey lyrics come into the picture. From there, just about every member of the band gets their moment, ranging from Myers and her soft vocals during the chorus to the fluttering keys in the second half.

The single also features a tiny detail at the end, where a shaker played by Myers and Moltke’s one-year-old son can be heard. It’s the sort of addition that shows how the band can let loose while putting together songs with sincere sentimentality.
