With a North America tour right around the corner and a new full-length release in the form of Manual For Dying, LA-based band Patriarchy isn’t afraid of getting depraved on the pulsating dark techno of “Coming Up.”
It comes as no surprise that the provocative duo is pushing the envelope when it comes to “snuff pop,” a genre they’ve centered their sound around across their discography. However, what separates Manual For Dying from past efforts is Patriarchy’s ability to keep things fresh at every turn.
“The songs celebrate the ability to feel deeply, to hurt, to desire, to experience pleasure and pain without shame, and to live without the approval of God—whoever or whatever society has chosen as god this week,” said the band.
As if it weren’t already apparent from the sinister synths at the start, Patriarchy makes it clear that “Coming Up” is another show of loyalty towards their established sound by way of their songwriting.
Lines like “Sucking so hard / I think he’ll drown” and “Now he’s tensing up / Now I’m turning blue” leave little to the imagination while adding to the already icky atmosphere communicated clearly through the band’s strong sense of aesthetics. The lyrics also show they know what they’re doing, continually spinning twisted tales that complement their dark production.

Among many other aspects, the fuzzy guitar that comes into play at the halfway point represents the band’s unpredictability that keeps listeners on their toes, unsure of where Patriarchy will take them next.
