As he prepares for the release of his debut album, dropping singles left and right, Cain Culto is doubling down on his brand of provocative rap-pop with the aptly titled “Brujería.” The last few songs he’s dropped so far, including “KFC Santería,” have been unabashed in their lyrical content.
However, while that track did not shy away from biting political commentary and punchlines that literally punch you in the face, “Brujería” is a focused yet steamy track that equates witchcraft to lovemaking.
The change in subject matter is unified with the rest of Cain’s discography thanks to the fact that his energy remains unmistakable. From the beginning, the unorthodox production and vocals fraught with desperation come together in a manner that’s complementary to recent singles. Think Timbaland in the 2000s, but if he had come up in today’s age.
In case it wasn’t clear already, Cain’s repetition of wanting to “freak ya” leaves little to the imagination. The connection between witchcraft and desire works in his favor, allowing him to play off of satanic panic-like songwriting that never takes itself too seriously, yet does enough to stir the pot.
While some may have expected lyrics more in line with “KFC Santería” and other recent singles, especially since Cain is the sort of artist who’s unafraid to say the quiet part loud, “Brujería” is a different side to him that’s still true to the kind of provocative image he’s made for himself. It’s a showcase for Cain that ensures his upcoming project will feature a wide variety of songs.
