As part of her newly released third album, THE BPM, out via Stones Throw Records, Sudan Archives is shifting the dancefloor forward with the shapeshifting, club-ready track “THE NATURE OF POWER.”
With the album, Sudan is unveiling her Gadget Girl persona, a musician from the future that would be right home in a sci-fi movie. It’s a fitting move considering the record takes after electronic dance music of all varieties, with “THE NATURE OF POWER” showing a full spectrum of influences.
Which is why it’s no coincidence that the album split its recording between LA, Chicago, and Detroit, three cities known for their connection to Black dance music on top of personal ties for Sudan through her parents.
“No one can take away your rhythm from you – no one can take away your self-will,” said Sudan on the album’s core concept. “All those things can be your own power if you utilize them right.”
Safe to say, she knows how to utilize all her best aspects and thread them across a tracklist equal parts nostalgic and futuristic in its thinking. “THE NATURE OF POWER” embraces unorthodox production that keeps you on the edge, whether it be the buzzing of an unknown instrument or Sudan’s glitchy vocals.
After an abrasive yet rousing opening, the song settles into a techno groove that bridges the gap between Kraftwerk rhythms and modern house-inflicted R&B, two sides that she makes her own.
By the end of the song, Sudan comes out on the other side having shown herself to be an artist that can break down a tried and true genre like techno to its roots and electrify it, her vocals and songwriting serving as the defibrillator.
