Before he moves on to bigger projects currently in the works, Jean Dawson is capping his Glimmer of God era with the 2024 album’s deluxe edition that includes the bubbly alt-pop single “White Lighter.”
Although the rest of the deluxe, Rock A Bye Baby, Glimmer Of God, is out Nov. 14, Dawson on “White Lighter” shows how his range stretches to radio-ready pop music territory while remaining true to his more eclectic sensibilities.
The recent teaser comes after a stacked 2025, where the Tijuana-San Diego native kept busy opening for Linkin Park, dropping “Blitz” for the Jordan Peele-produced movie “HIM,” and headlining his Miracle Mile tour.
The funky bass, shimmering synths, and electric guitar that energize the track throughout are among the elements of “White Lighter” that you could imagine any big pop star utilizing in a lead single. But in Dawson’s case, he establishes his own style through songwriting that pulls you in upon closer listens.
Despite the more upbeat instrumental, Dawson’s lyrics tell a different story, with lines such as “I slow dance in a room full of nothing” and “Lost in the maze you made” more befitting of the setup to a horror story. However, the contrast speaks more to his tendency to challenge listeners’ tastes, exposing them to different sounds reflecting his varied influences.
It’s the sort of single that exemplifies why everyone from SZA to A$AP Rocky has collaborated with Dawson, whose aptitude for changing directions on each release puts him at the forefront of like-minded peers in the industry.
