Thanksgiving wasn’t spared this year, as singer-songwriters Cain Culto and Xiuhtezcatl teamed up for an unfiltered, “Se Encendio el Beeper” type of hip-hop single, “¡BASTA YA!”

Both artists are no strangers to injecting their music with political messages that pertain to Indigenous and Latine communities. While Xiuhtezcatl is perhaps best known for his activism, Cain has garnered a following for uncensored lyrics that say it like it is.

With their collaboration, they don’t shy away from calling out ongoing issues, ranging from systemic racism to colonialism, a topic relevant to the Thanksgiving release date. At the same time, “¡BASTA YA!” serves as an anthem capturing the present moment.

But out of the song’s many strong suits, the blunt, cutthroat stand out from start to finish. Cain and Xiuhtezcatl trade verses in English and Spanish, with the latter’s highlights consisting of “Resisto al sistema que nos sigue oprimiendo” and “Y como una mamá furiosa los persigo con mi chancla.”

On the English language side, Xiuhtezcatl takes center stage on the third verse, dishing out lines like “Dead presidents and kings / Afraid of us taking our freedom” and “How they calling us illegal on a land that they stole.”

Given the two artists’ shared history in activism and music-making, it leaves you wondering why a collaboration hadn’t arrived sooner, considering how natural they come together. But for what it’s worth, “¡BASTA YA!” more than makes up for that wait.

The song arrives with a music video directed by Cain Culto with Willium Andrade as the DP. The video is quite mesmerizing with its vibrant colors, fashion, movement, and powerful imagery. The bold lyrics are displayed through every scene in both Spanish and English.
