Coming off tour dates and an overall accomplished year, Charlotte Day Wilson is back with the help of Saya Gray on “Lean.”

Alongside Gray, another talented Canadian singer-songwriter who’s coming off SAYA from last year, “Lean” is another win for Wilson, who’s quickly distinguishing herself as one of the most forward-thinking singers working right now.

Although the production on “Lean” may be more befitting of an anthemic electronic jam, Wilson repurposes the bass pulses and sci-fi synths for a slow seduction of a song. Unsurprisingly, Gray’s penchant for genre-bending production makes for a natural collaboration, which comes in on the second half and joins Wilson on the chorus.

While the bouncy sound of “Lean” is more than deserving of praise, it’s what Wilson and Gray do with the production that makes the single such a standout. As if their voices are part of the instrumental itself, they’re able to shapeshift no matter where “Lean” goes, keeping their focus on a song that’s about codependency.

It’s safe to say Wilson has been on an upward trajectory since her debut. With the singer nabbing the first-ever Innovator Award from last year’s Billboard Canada Women in Music and new music on the way, there’s a lot to look forward to for fans of Wilson.

But the fact that she has maintained her pulse on intimate songwriting and atmospheres speaks to how unwavering her style is.
