Nashville trio The Shindellas are out to rekindle the girl group tradition and their latest song “Ooh La La” arrives as a suitably revitalizing blend of disco-soul. It’s also the third teasing glimpse they’ve shared from their forthcoming album Shindo, which promises nine tracks overflowing with their love of shimmering melodics and divine three-part harmonies. Previous singles include the anthemically funky ode “Last Night Was Good for My Soul” and “Juicy,” a bass-lush slow burner gushing with an enchanting sensuality.
Their new song “Ooh La La” unfurls itself over an alluring exchange between The Shindellas’ vocal duties — split between Tamara Chauniece, Stacy Johnson, and Kasi Jones — and a glittery R&B-funk. Much like the album’s other singles, it soundtracks the enrapturing euphoria of being caught up in a moment of physical and emotional intimacy, be it on the dancefloor or somewhere more discrete.
Over spirals of scintillating riffs and effervescent synths, The Shindellas pay homage to the kind of timelessly dreamy and soulful romancers produced by girl groups of decades past. Reimagining it in modern terms and similarly withstanding pressures to conform to the constraints imposed on them. There are no lead singers to be found amongst the trio — all three shine iridescently alongside the other.
“Ooh La La” also comes with a new music video from The Shindellas — one that finds the trio celebrating and reveling in the song’s infectiously jubilant melody for a small group of friends. Filmed in the seclusion of a verdant backyard patio the film doubles as a live performance by the group as they trade their luminous vocals to the delight of their audience. It doesn’t take long for the mini-concert to transform into a rejoicing dance party either — which is of course led and inspired by the singers themselves.
