The Greek Theater has always been known for its beautiful landscape and its fantastic quality of sound. Though it’s located in Los Angeles, it feels hidden from city life’s hustle and noise. Every show here feels incredibly intimate and personal, regardless of where your seats might be. On Wednesday night, a match made in the musical heavens came to fruition; Weyes Blood was set to perform at the Greek Theater.
The artist made her stop in Los Angeles on the In Holy Flux Tour, coming off the success of her 5th album, And in Darkness, Hearts Aglow. There wasn’t a more perfect venue to complement her sound, and every piece of her set felt incredibly intentional. The moment Natalie Mering (aka Weyes Blood) stepped on the stage, it seemed as though the entire audience had been shutting their eyes and holding their breath, and with her first melody, it felt like everyone had opened their eyes to find themselves in another world.

The stage was adorned with candelabras and warmed with red and pink lighting, feeling almost medieval. “It’s Not Just Me, It’s Everybody” was her powerful intro to the evening, walking back and forth through the soft light as her glittering dress twirled around her. As Mering carried along through her set, she delivered every song as though it was a kiss on the forehead from the universe.
Through the years, her work has become a bit of a diary, universalizing some of the loneliness and desire for connection she has felt. She used her ethereal voice as a powerful tool to convey her thoughts and emotions, and you could tell by swaying bodies and tear-filled eyes that the crowd was resonating with her. When her song Twin Flame began, you could see the beautiful heart embedded in her dress glow a bright red, further adding to the impact and aesthetic. She also took a moment to throw out some glow sticks to her audience, likely a nod to a statement she made through SubPop; “My heart is a glow stick that’s been cracked, lighting up my chest in an explosion of earnestness,” again showcasing the efforts put forth to curate the concert experience.

After moving through some of the favorites like “Andromeda,” “Movies,” and “A Lot’s Gonna Change,” they ended one of the longest sets they’ve played with a particularly impactful piece, “Picture Me Better.” This was more than a concert; it was an experience and a venture into another realm, where you not only heard the music but also felt and saw everything she was sharing with you. Weyes Blood holds that raw talent and power that forces you to be present. Combining that ability with the quiet sanctuary that is the Greek Theater, it was a night that won’t be soon forgotten.
