Over the course of the last two years, Los Angeles-based artist sophie meiers has carefully assembled a series of portals in the form of three EPs that immerse you in the vivid worlds evoked by their music. Textured by a haunting sonic palette and populated with collisions of visceral sound and emotion, their latest single “hotline” arrives as the final piece before the release of their crawl__space EP.
As the title suggests, the collection inhabits the neglected underbelly beneath the surface-level facades of everyday life. One that peers past the synthetic phantasmagoria of shine__space and the primal revelations of spark__space to unearth the macabre and sordid bowels of human experience.
On their new song “hotline” they become a mouthpiece for unhinged and frenzied obsession. A rush of frantic beats and manic guitars boil over as they tease the hidden delirium that wants to claw its way out from behind their deceptively innocuous appearances. “I’m in the back seat / manically laughing,” meiers drones over the track’s unrelenting melody. “never think about where i’ll be / if only now you could see me, me, me.”

But it’s not just their lyricism that contributes to its dually unnerving and exhilerating emotion. Like previous singles “mutt” and “forever mine,” the ominous atmosphere of crawl__space is owed just as much to its entrancing soundscapes. From the frayed edges that twist their hazy vocals to the distorted and heavily shuddering industrial electronica that crackles forebodingly within.
“I wrote this story from the perspective of a seemingly unassuming character who is actually wrapped up in some crazy shit,” they explained. “They look sweet and innocent from the outside, but they never show anybody who they really are.”

The release of “hotline” includes a music video directed/produced/edited by Lindsey Nico Mann that captures the song’s panicked urgency. One that illustrates the fever dream of eerie wonder that sits at the center of the new EP with shots of meiers contorted and frantic across an equally chilling array of settings. Like the beginnings of some horrific found footage flick, the music video tosses you right into the disorienting netherworlds of crawl__space.
