Amyl and The Sniffers shatter the silence that’s settled over the band since the drop of their sophomore record a few years ago with a pair of incendiary songs, “U Should Not Be Doing That” and “Facts.” The arrival of both offerings ahead of their upcoming North American tour — which includes two nights at The Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles on August 14-15th — means fans have plenty of time to get familiar with the new singles!
With unapologetic bombast and flashing a toothy grin of irreverence, “U Should Not Be Doing That” gleefully bites off the heads of those who make their delicate (or misogynistic) sensibilities other people’s problem. Launching itself over a live-wire and savagely punchy melody that punctuates Amyl Taylor‘s fiery sneers with virulent sonics. “I was in LA, shaking my shit / While you were down in Melbourne saying, Fuck that bitch,” she howls as she aims her daggered words at people who still groan over the sight of a female rocker showing some skin.
For Taylor, the song speaks directly to those “random 40-year-old metalheads sitting around a table doing lines and bitching about a 28-year-old chick in a band for wearing shorts and ‘selling out.'” The music video for “U Should Not Be Doing That” is itself a pumped-up and adrenaline-pulsing montage that finds Taylor and actor Steven Ogg sweating and raging in the desert heat.
On “Facts” the band dolls out rabble-rousing percussion and grinding riffs as they crank up the energy to meet an onslaught of anxiety. This is an anthem to soundtrack a headlong charge through that dire gauntlet called life, dodging frenetic despair and all the bullshit flung in your path to the tune of shrieking guitars. Amyl and The Sniffers prove once again that even when they’re saddled by other people’s objections or the overwhelming angst of the world — they’ll always go down swinging.
