BEST NEW MUSIC

Co-produced alongside Chris Taylor (Grizzly Bear) and Tycho guitarist Zac Brown, INFINITE HEALTH was conceived by Scott Hansen to be a dramatic, propulsive turn in a new direction. Creating a throbbing, anthemic, and infinitely danceable tracklist that is itself sonically and thematically hopeful. Talking about the record, the San Francisco artist said it was “about hope for the future and a requiem for the past.”

Elaborating on its inspirations, Hansen added: “I kept thinking back to the high-water mark scene in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, the author sitting at a typewriter looking out a window onto his past, trying to find meaning in the chaos. Infinite Health is about creating a space for reflection, a mantra for spiritual, emotional, and physical healing. Ultimately, all we really have is our health — both physical and mental — and we wish infinite health to our family and friends. So in those ways, infinite health is a salutation and an imperative.”

The first taste of the electro-euphoria Tycho has dreamed up for his seventh studio album is “Phantom.” The track is a gloriously scintillating rush of vaporizing synths and bubbling bass—it’s not hard to see why Hansen declared this four-minute hypnotic descent his favorite on INFINITE HEALTH.

Joining the new single is a mesmeric, mind-bending music video that Tycho collaborated with Pixel Flux (Ricardo B. Ponce) to create. Honing in on a prismatic sphere of light, the film evokes the cosmic visuals found in “2001: A Space Odyssey” or “Interstellar,” and synced to the song the effect is doubly entrancing.

“I wanted ‘Phantom’ to feel like a blend of lights in a nightclub with some unknown entity; a moving and shifting intelligence that served as a conduit to a deeper understanding of what’s beneath the surface of existence,” Hansen explained. “It’s also about coming to terms with mortality, with the phantom being the ever-present specter. I spent more hours on this song than any other on the record. I played a Juno emulation for that bassline, and I feel like that bassline, and style of bass playing, is something pretty new for me.”
