On her second album Dotr, LP Giobbi explores how a bombardment of loss might lead to a blossoming of reverential joy. From beloved family members to longtime artistic mentors—she journeys through her grief guided by voicemails from those who’ve passed away, as well as recordings from friends like Brittany Howard, Panama, and Danielle Ponder.
“When I was young I used to write my parents little notes and leave them under their pillow or around the house and I would sign them ‘love, Dotr’ as I was (and still am) the world’s worst speller. To this day when they write me a birthday card or whatever, they start it ‘Dear Dotr.,'” LP Giobbi shared. “This album is a lot about what it is to be a daughter, have a daughter and love a daughter, as well as a way of honoring some of the most important women in my life. There are also a lot of themes tied to home (the ones we create or the ones we were born into) which, for me, are reflected through my identity as a daughter.”

For the album’s lead single “Bittersweet,” LP Giobbi turned to one of her idols Portugal. the Man to lend their shimmering vocals to the track’s funky energy. Propelled by gleaming electronica, soaring instrumental samples, and the dreamily urgent pulse of bass, the song shares just a few minutes of the kind of melodic radiance that can be expected from Dotr. Boasting deep grooves that ignite an entrancing, liberating bliss “Bittersweet” arrives as a superb summer anthem.
“Portugal. the Man have been my favorite band since 2012 when I discovered their album ‘In the Mountain in the Cloud.’ I cannot tell you how many late night air guitar jams I have had to that album in my living room,” LP Giobbi said of the single’s collaborative creation. “I just about passed out when they asked me to remix one of their songs a couple of years ago and then again when they sent me some tunes to work on, including what is now ‘Bittersweet’. The vocal is one of the most attention grabbing melodies I have heard in a long time.”
