Slapping you in the face with its drums at the beginning, Sharon Van Etten & The Attachment Theory’s electrifying single “I Can’t Imagine (Why You Feel This Way)” off the group’s self-titled album, is as self-confident as it is defiant. To the sound of a smooth bassline and glittery synths shimmering around ghastly vocals, Van Etten sings about a world in disarray. Despite the ongoing chaos and what she sees on the TV, she finds a way to tune it out, contrasting the banquet of sonic textures in the song.

Unsurprisingly, the vocals don’t get lost in the flurry of instruments crashing into each other, a feat that speaks to Van Etten as a singer-songwriter. While the melody may seem as though the song employs a chorus, in actuality, it relies on back-to-back verses to continue her barrage. Coupled with slap-happy drums and an acid-jazz-laced guitar, you get what might be one of the most kinetic tracks to ever come out of Van Etten’s catalog.

Sharon Van Etten & The Attachment Theory are currently on tour. Catch them in Los Angeles when they perform at The Wiltern on May 21.
