If there was a competition for the most direct song title, then Canadian producer/artist Marie Davidson’s “Push Me Fuckhead” would take the cake. Coming off of her latest album, City Of Clowns, the track is a synth-heavy dare, with Davidson satirizing the current state of social media and technology at large through punchy one-liners. In between the buzzing synths and brief eruptions of intensity, she also throws in lines that tease at the album’s larger themes, whether it be exclaiming, “No way, that’s too much gluten,” or jokingly saying, “We can upgrade your monthly plan.”

The production, also co-produced by Davidson, falls into a timeless pocket where any possible influences could have come from the 80s or the modern day, keeping everything feeling relevant to the current moment. And as the song evolves, flirting with glitchy industrial sounds, Davidson earns her jester’s privilege, delivering a danceable takedown on our technological woes.

We last saw Marie Davidson at the Echoplex in 2018. She will return to L.A. with an upcoming show at Garibaldina MB Society on April 5. Don’t miss out, if you know what’s good.
