Mexico’s Midnight Generation, always the type to know how to tastefully pay homage to bygone eras while taking music into the future, are back with their latest album, Teacher. The title track, featuring Zimmer90, takes after genres ranging from surf rock to 70s disco at a brisk pace. But the five-piece knows when to slow matters down when needed, allowing the impassioned vocals to take an already successful track to new heights as the pristine production takes a backseat.

However, that’s not to say the sonic textures are solely there as backup. At multiple points, the glistening guitar and 80s-esque synths come together to keep the dance grooves going. That marriage between electronic production and good old rock instrumentation makes Midnight Generation such a reliable act to return to time and time again. And while there are undoubtedly familiar trademarks to be heard on “Teacher,” there’s little reason why that should take away from the simple fact that the band knows how to set the mood right.
