Touring in support of her debut album, Animaru, Grimy Goods caught up with Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter/guitarist Mei Semones ahead of her Los Angeles tour dates at the Highland Park Ebell (July 17) and the Lodge Room (July 18 sold out). Mei shares which 80s cult classic movie inspired her to play the guitar, what a day on tour looks like, her favorite things to eat, her love for anime (especially from a beloved Japanese animation studio), and more.

Hot off the heels of a EU/UK tour supporting Panchiko, Mei Semones is currently on her debut headline tour through North America. After Los Angeles, she will head to San Francisco, Portland, Vancouver, and Seattle, before traveling to Japan and several other stops in Asia, and then to Europe.

A delicate, but rockin’ fusion of jazz, Japanese folk, and chamber pop, Mei Semones makes heartbreak sound like a sakura petal drifting downstream. If you haven’t yet listened to her gorgeous new album, Animaru, you should find it on your preferred streaming platform and press play. Just so you know, this album will have you hitting that repeat button.
