Celeste “Everyday”
Ahead of her upcoming album this year that she began laying the groundwork for last year, British-Jamaican singer-songwriter Celeste is ushering in a new era for herself on “Everyday” after providing music for projects like “The Color Purple,” “Blitz,” and many more. The dreamy guitar, laced with reverb, is about as smooth as Celeste’s vocals, laying atop one another in a track that hypnotizes from the first few seconds. However, the trace is short-lived when the heavy bass comes into the picture, giving “Everyday” an edge that compliments the tale of obsession in the lyrics.
Right before the climactic crash of rapidly paced drums, Celeste goes as far as to say, “I might die if I don’t have you this time,” a point that she drives home thanks to the clear desperation heard in her voice. The closing bridge is frantic and violent in execution, serving as a cautionary tale on obsession that, despite one’s best judgment, may end up consuming you the same way the production sticks with you long after repeated listens.

Panchiko “Shady in the Graveyard” feat. billy woods
First debuting in 2000 before falling into obscurity and being rediscovered in the late 2010s, British indie rock band Panchiko is a rare example of how forward-thinking music can benefit artists in the long run. 25 years later, they’re readying their next album, Ginkgo, out April 4 via Nettwerk, with “Shandy in the Graveyard” featuring billy woods.
Slightly distancing themselves from their tried and true sound, which perfected lo-fi long before anyone else in the 2000s or 2010s, Panchiko still holds onto their specific brand of alt-rock instrumentation that swirls around as if broadcasting live from the bottom of the ocean. Rapper billy woods follows lead singer Owain Davies’ vocals for an introspective and equally dreamy feature full of colorful lines such as “A glassy-eyed Gordon Parks” and “Cyclops in its maze afraid.” As far as unexpected collaborations go, “Shandy in the Graveyard” is one of the successful few that brings the best out of the respective artists while serving as a shattering depiction of longing.
See Panchiko on their headlining tour in LA at Hollywood Palladium on June 14 and San Diego at SOMA on June 13.

Luke Sital-Singh “Still Young”
In the wake of several changes to his life, most notably welcoming a baby boy, UK singer-songwriter Luke Sital-Singh is using the good and the bad to fuel his upcoming album, Fool’s Spring, out Feb. 21 via Nettwerk. “Still Young,” the latest single off the full-length release, falls somewhere in between the freezing cold of winter and the sunny glow of spring, with Sital-Singh asking questions such as “Is it worse to be afraid?” and “I’m not wise, is it stupid?”
The decision to revolve the track around a sole guitar lets Sital-Singh’s reverb-inflicted voice attract most of the attention and perfectly set up the fluttering chorus. However, that’s nothing compared to the cathartic burst of shining synths that come as a surprise, serving as a small taste of Fool’s Spring and its eclectic nature.
