In the midst of the tragic fires hitting Los Angeles this week, folks took a breather for a night of relaxation at none other than the Fonda Theatre in Hollywood. Warming the crowd up was the lovely Luke Sital-Singh. This London-native graced the room with his lush vocals and beautiful lyrics. Singh’s music actually streamed on my Spotify recommendations a few months ago so I had become a little familiar with him. If you like Damien Rice I feel I can promise you that you’d love Luke.
Once the theatre filled in, it was just about time for the main event. Our favorite sibling folk duo, Angus & Julia Stone sold their sole LA date out. With the recent release of their fourth studio album Snow, they are back and better than ever. Kicking their set off with the intro to one of the new songs, “My House Your House,” the audience instantly sunk. Between the brother and sister pair, their distinctive vocals sounded SO good. I remember catching their set at Outside Lands in 2015 and instantly falling in love with their live performance. They do sound pretty spot on to their studio recordings, however the live aspect is even more riveting (if that is even possible). Julia is ever striking and has the most delicate way of expressing herself while still being so damn powerful! You can’t keep your eyes off of her! Then you have Angus who sticks out with his funky style. I’m convinced he has a closet for those silly trucker hats, but that’s just me.
It really is tough for me to describe Angus & Julia Stone with any word other than perfect. I find their music captivates and serve each and every listener. They carried through the night with favorite songs such as “Heart Beats Slow” and the well-known hit “Big Jet Plane,” while still leaving time for an incredible cover of Neil Young’s “Harvest Moon”. Thank god.
