As if there was any doubt that singer-songwriter Sofia Isella would take a left turn with her new single, “Out in the Garden,” it becomes apparent from the start that she intends on doubling down.
The track, co-written and co-produced by Mr Hudson, is a continuation of the darker turn Isella set for herself on the previously released “Muse.” In comparison, “Out in the Garden” is an industrial hair-raiser that’s set against a nightmare inspired by religious trauma.
“I got called demonic for the first time,” Isella said. “I call it, losing my demonic virginity. It’s coming for us all, ladies.”
The first few lines of “Out in the Garden” set the scene for Hannah, the song’s main character, who finds herself in an oppressive and religious environment. From the outset, Hannah is “on her knees, but for all the holy reasons divine” before being coerced into meeting the narrator in the garden – “Dressed like the devil.”
Those lyrics are given more weight when considering the thundering drums and echoed vocals that create a disorienting sensation while listening closely to Isella’s voice. It doesn’t take long to realize that Hannah’s situation is complicated, with the production matching Isella and her ability to show a full vocal range throughout the runtime.
Rather than trying to comfort listeners, Isella shows on “Out in the Garden” that she’s more interested in confronting the uncomfortable in hopes of offering a helping hand to those who find themselves in the dark scenarios she brings to the table. And to her credit, the cathartic second half of the song takes Isella to new heights.
