The story behind My Chemical Romance’s ferocious track “Vampires Will Never Hurt You” is a wild one. And a pretty badass story.
I recently attended MCR’s LA show at Dodger Stadium, and I was so stoked to hear them play “Vampires Will Never Hurt You.” It is my personal favorite because of its punk intensity, and ultimately, that guttural howl that Gerard Way lays out throughout the song.
When they performed at Dodger Stadium, it felt like it was 2002, and they were back at Nada Recording Studio with Gerard wailing for the first time.

So, the story behind that wail, that manic scream, there was some serious pain behind it.
Gerard was not in a happy mood. He was bitching and moaning because he just had emergency dental work done on a gnarly abscess in his tooth. Dude pops into Nada all woozy and delirious on painkillers, mumbling and slurring his words. With a bloody mouth, he was not about singing in his current disposition.
But an album needed to be cut, the band and producer were all there, and work had to be done. What happened next is wild.
