I love music that lives in rage and chaos, especially when it’s balanced by moments of zen. That kind of contrast is a beautiful dichotomy, and when it’s done right, it stirs powerful emotions and delivers real catharsis. Turnstile’s new album, Never Enough, embodies that balance perfectly.
Never Enough is Turnstile’s most accessible album to date. By “accessible,” I mean it truly has something for everyone. And while the O.G. hardcore fans might cringe at that idea, it speaks volumes about the band’s evolution and consistent willingness to experiment. Don’t get me wrong, I used to be one of those kids who hated seeing my favorite underground punk bands blow up. We selfishly labeled them sellouts.
When I started this music blog back in 2008, we were deep in the era of heavy music criticism and relentless gatekeeping. So I understand the frustration longtime fans feel. But I also understand—now more than ever—the necessity for artists to grow, explore, and evolve.
Ironically, the moments newer listeners might skip over are often the same ones longtime Turnstile fans might turn up the volume and hit repeat.
