Picture Day, the upcoming debut from PawPaw Rod due May 15, is still some ways away. But the Oklahoma-raised singer and rapper is keeping anticipation high with his newest single, “Bettin On Me.” This summer, PawPaw Rod will head on tour, including a Los Angeles show at The Roxy on Sept. 11.

While the rest of the album is expected to explore his experiences as a military brat, constantly moving to new schools and having to reinvent himself each time, “Bettin On Me” is a confidence boost of serotonin in song form.

True to the title of the song, PawPaw Rod dives into how believing in yourself takes time and dedication rather than a cure-all that lands on your lap. In a simple summary of the song, he said, “This is me reppin’ me, swimming in my abilities, trusting myself, and showing up for Picture Day.”

The steady drum beat alone is enough to communicate the easygoing nature of “Bettin On Me.” But PawPaw Rod gets to show off his ability to stretch himself vocally, while also proving he has an ear for radio-friendly hits.

Whether it’s the sunny instrumentation or the laidback lyrics that are easy to get stuck in your head, it’s hard not to enjoy the simplicity of the single. At the same time, there’s no denying how PawPaw Rod tackles a subject with ease and a calm energy that’s felt from his vocals to the instrumental.

With Picture Day set to arrive on May 15, it’s not a reach to say PawPaw Rod is applying the philosophy heard on “Bettin On Me” and practicing it for the rest of the album.

Catch PawPaw Rod in LA at The Roxy on Sept. 11 or on another tour date.
