Interview: SXSW 2011 with Gary Clark Jr. from Austin

Gary Clark Jr. is one of the best kept secrets that’s about to explode! Acclaimed as the “future of Texas blues,” we caught him last week at the Foundry on Melrose for an intimate two-set performance that left the crowd in complete awe. He has an undeniably authentic sound heavy in the blues from Delta to Chicago and then some. Not to mention, he can handle some vicious Jimi-Hendrix-like guitar licks or throw you in for a loop with his sweet tunes both rich in soul and doo-wop where his falsetto hits angelic ranges. It doesn’t get any more real or pure than Gary Clark Jr. when it comes to blues and rock and roll. He radiates all that raw goodness from the 60s but made for today. No additives or preservatives, just delicious rock and blues.

Gary will be at SXSW! Make it a point to be at one of his showcases this year.

  • How many SXSWes have you done?
I’ve done just about every SXSW since 2002.
  • What showcases are you doing this year?

  • What bands do you want to see at SXSW year?
Honestly, I haven’t really checked out the line up but I just like wandering into something. Its pretty easy to do this week.
  • What word of advice would you give to newbie SXSWers?
My advice is to go check out things you’ve never heard of, there are some hidden gems.
  • SXSW drink of choice?
H2O is my drink of choice this year. I definitely didn’t drink enough last year…ya know.
