Seattle’s psychedelic purveyors of hip hop, Shabazz Palaces are back in Los Angeles with a headlining performance scheduled at the Roxy on Wednesday Jul 30. Led by Ishmael Butler aka ‘Palaceer Lazaro’ (once ‘Butterfly’ of jazz-rap group Digable Planets) and multi-instrumentalist Tendai ‘Baba’ Maraire, son of Mbira master Dumisani Maraire — Shabazz Palaces deliver an intergalactic dose of dark hip hop not meant for mainstream rap minds. I guess you could say it’s hip hop for the progressive intellectual that wants their flows and beats to have some actual substance behind them and not just some candy-coated bling. Shabazz Palaces are set to release their second album, Lese Majesty, on July 29 via Sup Pop. This will be the follow up to their critically acclaimed 2011 debut, Black Up.
