Bringing that sultry soul to the Skirball Cultural Center, British soul singer Alice Russell put on a grooving performance this past Friday at the Skirball. Despite the many technical issues that occurred during Russell’s performance (sound going out), the songbird kept her cool by laughing it off which was pleasant and reassuring to her audience. Commanding the attention of the crowd, Russell exudes pure confidence in every lyric she soulfully sings. Fans were treated to songs off her latest album, To Dust, as well some of her early recordings with the influential label, Tru Thoughts. With powerful vocals, she had fans struttin’ and snappin’ their fingers to her every move.
Supporting acts included the L.A. based producer and multi-instrumentalist, Lost Midas, and the San Francisco electro soul band The Seshen. Both performances brought the heat as they warmed up the crowd with their awesome sets. The Seshen delivered a sexy dose of soul (they were seriously stunning), while Lost Midas had our feet shuffling to this gloriously chaotic beats.
