Back when Patti Smith and her group were recording their third studio album, Easter, with producer Jimmy Iovine, her paths crossed with Bruce Springsteen who was in the same studio recording his highly regarded album Darkness on the Edge of Town. From this happenstance was born a little ditty called “Because The Night” which is credited as being co-written by the two stars – “A Bruce and Patti Smith Presentation” as Patti claims at the end of this classic video of the song, taped for German T.V. (see below). However, after Patti filled in some lyrical blanks and released her take on “Because The Night,” it eventually led to the commercial breakthrough of the song which climbed the Billboard charts to #13 in 1978. While it doesn’t define her long and prosperous career there is no doubt that it has a strong, memorable presence that continues to inspire musicians and listeners today. Most recently, in 2013, Garbage and Screaming Females collaborated on a stellar cover of the hit both live and for Record Store Day.
Patti Smith, beloved Godmother of Punk, commanded the utmost respect and attention from listeners, back in her early heyday and today. She remains a contemporary influence but comes from a past that is pure Vintage Gold. Check out this Patti Smith video of her ’78 classic “Because The Night!”
