Memphis’ legendary Stax Records have helped launch the careers of many prominent African American artists since their inception in 1959 and they continue to play an integral part in showcasing the immense musical talents of timeless artists such as Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Booker T & the MG’s, Wilson Pickett, and Staples Singers, just to name a few. They have been bringin’ the funk since 1959 and there’s no stopping now!

I have to say, my all time favorite has to go to Otis Redding. The power and soul behind that man’s voice in his very short but legendary career can’t be compared to.

My favorite is a tie hope that doesn’t disqualify me. Isaac Hayes & The Emotions , Isaac produced their best songs while they were there, and He himself was a towering musical force.

Favorite Stax artist has to be Otis. I remember the first time I saw his Moterey Pop Festival performance on DVD. His performance of I’ve Been Loving You Too Long is legendary.

Grimy Goods,
Please hook me up with some Stax swag! I was raised on Rufus Thomas since I was a kid. Otis and Booker T. are on my sound system constantly, but these days my idol and cure for all ills is Albert King. If you give me the shirt and the records they’ll likely never come off my back and sound system, respectively.
Your Soul Brother,
Tyler Johnson
