Brooklyn indie pop-folk trio Pearl and the Beard have given us three tasty aural morsels from their forthcoming album, Beast, which have left us craving more, more, more! Singles “You,” “Again Animal,” and are like an amuse bouche, a quick bite to invigorate our musical palettes and a delicious preview of what’s to come once their new full length Beast is released on June 21. It’s barely enough to hold us over but we are listening to these tracks on repeat and waiting patiently and with great anticipation for the rest.
“You” immediately employs thunderous and rolling rhythmic sweetness that is irresistible to the ears. It also switches gears, in a clever non-abstruse way, swelling with bittersweet harmonies (all three members share singing duties) and grand emotion into a crescendo of intricate noise; cue a poignant scene in an indie flick or a flashback to the hey day sounds of Pretty Girls Make Graves.
“Again Animal” keeps a similar momentum going but with softer, folk leanings and the harmonies remain to die for.
“Anything” showcases the band’s fondness for ’80s synth-pop which they list as one of their musical influences, along with Radiohead, Kimbra, Bon Iver and Neko Case. Easy to slow groove to this number as the song rides along a darker, downtempo and more introspective wave-length that is both haunting yet soothing and sexy.
The trio have previously shared the stage with great acts such as Ani DiFranco, Matt & Kim and Wild Child, just to name a few. Currently, the band is scheduled to play a slew of dates all up and down the West Coast this month alongside NY Theatre indie-folk heroes PigPen Theatre Co.
