One of our 13 L.A. Bands to Watch in 2015, shoegazers Blood Candy released their debut EP Dead Moon earlier this month — and damn, was it worth the wait.
A bit of My Bloody Valentine meets the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, this four-piece has been playing shows together since March of last year. Their reverb-heavy guitars meshes perfectly with the Karen O-like vocals of lead singer Tara.
I’ve had the opportunity to see Blood Candy perform live a handful of times, and it has been a joy to see the way some of the songs have been shaped from their early days to now — produced by The Icarus Line’s Joe Cardamone, a veteran of the LA music scene himself.
The EP-opening “Dead Moon” is a wonderfully arranged track that has the vocals and dream-poppy guitars in perfect unison. The opening guitar and later tempo-change of “Surf Lion” is reminiscent of Gish-era Smashing Pumpkins
No song approaches the four-minute mark. From the mesmerizing chorus of “Honey” to the killer tempo-changes of “Starcrush,” after every song, Blood Candy leaves you wanting more.
Check out Blood Candy this Saturday June 13 at the Bootleg as they open up for The Warlocks, or June 15 at The Echo opening for Tennis System at a FREE show.
