In celebration of “International Women’s Day” and celebrating a “Day Without A Woman” I’ve compiled a list of 150 great songs from women in music, female-led acts. From music icons like Patti Smith, Wanda Jackson, Nina Simone, The Shangri-Las — to modern acts like Savages, Grimes, Tash Sultana, and The Kills — Grimy Goods Spotify playlist features a variety of women in music. We’ve covered the best from all genres and eras, stream it below.

Featuring and empowering women in music is something I’ve been doing since 2008, when Grimy Goods first hit the interwebs. At the time, there were maybe a handful of female music bloggers owning and operating a website of their own. There weren’t many Los Angeles-based music blogs, and there certainly weren’t any owned and operated by a woman. I remember publishing all my posts as anonymous or with a moniker, because during that time (as archaic as it sounds) women did not hold such bold opinions, and we weren’t as accepted in music as we are today. I got all sorts of hate and criticism (still do, but not the same kind) for being an opinionated woman in music, judged by my looks and not taken seriously. My first set of contributors were all women and for good reason, I kept it that way for some time before bringing men on board. And today, at least 70 percent of my content is all about the females.

It’s been amazing to see more women come up in the music industry — whether as musicians, label owners, promoters/talent bookers, publicists, and of course bloggers/journalists — along with countless other industries where women are smashing those glass ceilings.

In celebration of “International Women’s Day” and celebrating a “Day Without A Woman” — all of Grimy Goods’ content will feature female-fronted women who rock. Kudos to all the hardworking women out there, to the women crushing the norms and not afraid to take risks.
