Joy Downer

Joy Downer stole our hearts when they released their Radio Dreamer EP back in January. Now we are getting a visual treatment for their single, “Goddamnit,” and Grimy Goods is excited to premiere the music video (below).

The subject of Joy Downer’s debut EP is love, describing on various tracks the serendipity of finding it at first sight or the heights of its power. On “Goddamnit” we find the band lamenting the tougher side of romance. Their typically sunny disposition is clouded by a restlessness, marked by unwanted and overwhelming emotion. The video displays this in dream-like vignettes, showing lead singer Joy Downer (née Bishop) staring through opaque windows or sinking deep into the bath. It was directed by Ryan Lacen and Anthony Baldino, who connected with the band after syncing their music in the filmmaker’s last project, The Dust Storm. They wanted to express “a barrage of haunting entrapment and upbeat hopefulness,” and the contradiction between the two; after all, such duality is in the mission statement of the band. Read what Joy had to say about the track and give it your attention below.

Particularly, a relationship where distance plays a factor for that love to continue to grow. Sometimes it’s an actual physical distance, sometimes it’s a mental one. Either way…GODDAMNIT!” – Joy Downer   [/perfectpullquote]
