Los Angeles indie-pop sweethearts Grouplove have debuted the newest addition to their repertoire of life-affirming anthems with “Remember That Night.” With the release of last year’s Big Mess, the group officially made their departure from the surf-rock tinted sounds that firmly rooted them in the hearts of the Southern Californian beaches they so often sang about and their newest release is a continuation of their experimentation with pop’s limits. With Hannah Hooper at the helm on “Remember That Night,” the song dips itself into the band’s loving nostalgia for past romanticisms, rapidly delivered in her melodic, half-rapped inflections. It’s a song that has no problem gushing about the cheesy intimacies of young love, rattling forward on a shaky thundering of tambourine jingles, percussion slams, and roared choruses. Without any discernible guitar riffs–with the exception of the last few moments of the song–“Remember That Night” relies indefinitely on Hooper’s vocal melody to inject a shivering high in their absence and hold the thing together.
There’s always been something earnestly uplifting about Grouplove’s songs, every note of them joyously soaked in a delirious affection towards life, and in the past, those sentiments were rapturously captured solely by Christian Zucconi’s wild howls and headbangs. With every album, Hooper jumps more and more into the forefront, both as a singer and songwriter within the band–and the result has been the flourishing of the couple’s dynamic onstage, as well as their individual performances. “Remember That Night” is another fiery delivery by Hooper, not unlike her breakout moment on Big Mess with “Goodmorning,” and every time she takes lead vocals she breathes new and exciting life into a band who’s soul continues to oscillate so emphatically with a love for life.
“We’ve been writing a lot of new music recently–Hannah, in particular, is starting to come into her own in a new and very honest way. She is really starting to show her fire. Hope you can feel it,” said Zucconi about the new single.
