Indie-pop singer BØRNS has already wasted little time in the new year with the release of a single off his upcoming sophomore attempt Blue Madonna, peeling back his earlier synth fixations in favor of more organically sublime textures.  In, “God Save Our Young Blood,” the young singer’s normally stratospheric falsetto takes the backseat as he murmurs lushly throughout the track’s intro, harmonizing lightly to Lana Del Rey’s rich hums. Even in the song’s escalating chorus, as synths cascade in the background and Rey’s vocals start to soar, BØRNS exercises a restraint that punctuates the song’s melancholic pleas. A far cry from Dopamine‘s glam-pop bursts of heavy sensuality, “God Save Our Young Blood,” lightly shifts the formula towards a poignant introspection while still holding on tightly to those intoxicating atmospherics that permeates from BØRNS’ songs. There’s also something to be said about Rey’s background presence because typically her vocals overpower and dominate any song she’s featured on, yet both singer’s individual inflections and pitches compliment each other so well, it’s almost a seamless overlay of their voices.
