Montréal-based Anemone are coming back to Los Angeles for a headline show at Bootleg Theater on February 26. This will be one of four album release shows to celebrate their debut album Beat My Distance, set to be released on February 15th (Luminelle Recordings). The congruous album is a hazy, psych-pop soundtrack perfect for the dance floor too.
Anemone’s songs make you feel like you’re dancing in slow motion beneath a thin layer of smoke and flashing rainbow disco lights at a house party in a vintage Parisian flat, surrounded by strangers that somehow feel like family. After one listen, founder and songwriter Chloé Soldevila’s exposure to everything from psychedelia to French new wave is abundantly clear. Soldevila’s powerful vocals rise above, but never overpower, the dreamy melodies and catchy hooks emanating from the band’s vintage instruments. Genres weave effortlessly and harmoniously throughout every song. Standout tracks include the sanguine and infectious “Sunshine (Back to the Start)” and the retro synth pop dream “Daffodils.”
Recently released video / song “Memory Lane” (directed by Laura-Lynn Petrick) is a dreamy documentation of pure, genuine joy—a contrast to the lyrical content of the melancholic track. Soldevila says “Memory Lane is reminiscent of one’s unrepairable distance from another––the other not giving enough care to a mutual romance in an opportune time, causing both people to move on in separate directions.”
So what can you expect from an Anemone show? “The focus of the live show is to make people loose, getting them to dance, breaking people out of their shyness,” says guitarist Gabriel Lambert. “Making people go crazier and crazier every night. Our mission was to capture that feeling on [Beat My Distance].”
Anemone is Chloé Soldevila (keyboards/vocals), Miles Dupire-Gagnon (drums), Gabriel Lambert (guitar), Zachary Irving (guitar) and Samuel Gemme (bass).
Tickets to Anemone at Bootleg Theater are priced at $10 advance / $12 day of show. The show is 21 and over. Tickets are on sale now.
