Crywolf, the electronic project of Justin Taylor Phillips, has shared the first taste of his upcoming album widow [OBLIVIØN Pt. I] in the form his new song “DRIP.” Bubbling with the kind of atmospheric mayhem built to illustrate one of the more tumultuous years in Phillips’ life, “DRIP” is an intimate self-portrait of a mind on the fringes and one so gorgeously textured with a well of electronica. And wrapped up in the ever-shifting soundscapes is an emotionality that is in constant flux and one that is brought to life by Phillips’ fraying cries and overlayed tones. His new album of which “DRIP” is apart of was pieced together in the harrowing aftermath of having an album’s worth of music as well as thousands of dollars in equipment stolen. Phillips then retreated to a small cabin in Patagonia and a few other reclusive spots in North America to begin work on a new album, one that finds a bit of beauty in the existential growing-pains he’s experienced.
“One of the themes of this album is the exploration of the shadow – the darker, more difficult aspects of the human psyche. People often think they have one unified “personality,” but the truth is that we are made up of up to a dozen different personalities that are only loosely tied together. We feel like we have so much control over our actions and personality characteristics, but often when we pay close attention and are honest with ourselves, we can see that we can’t actually control or even explain large parts of who we are. ‘DRIP’ is my process of staring into my brain and being brutally honest about some of the really difficult aspects of what I see there. It might not be, but it’s uncomfortably real.”
