Santa Cruz-native Henry Chadwick has shared his latest single “Awake,” a further foray by the singer/songwriter into his sublime blending of garage-rock with power-pop. Tackling a sense of existential dread that had left Chadwick feeling pulled in a variety of different directions, both in his creative and personal endeavors, the song is a moment of introspection in which the singer wrests back control over his life. It’s a fuzzy fever-dream between all that head-crashing percussion and buzzy-guitar work, but through it all Chadwick’s cutting croon cuts through it all.

“Awake” combines Chadwick’s laid-back droll with a sense of poignant urgency, with a litany of odd sonics—warbling guitars stop-and-go as he wails to random piano thumps and pounding cymbals. And it’s all quite anxious but with just the right amount of breathlessness that makes it just as equally impressive—Chadwick not only mixes his tastes into something original, he also has something worth hearing to say.

“I had just moved to a house with more space and had just got back from a tour (with my old band) and had a little time to just sit on my porch and think about things,” Chadwick said of the new single’s inception. “I remember being exhausted and spread thin and finally having time to realize it. It’s about self-reflection and that moment when you catch your breath and have time to deal with all the things you’ve been ignoring. I think writing this song sort of helped me make next steps in my life and focus my efforts on my own music and to start taking on less projects that pulled me in different directions.”

Chadwick will be going on tour next month with a stop at The Love Song Bar in Los Angeles on October 24. His new EP The President of Make Believe is due out this year via Swoon City Music.
