Clairo

With the release of her debut album Immunity, 20-year-old Claire Cottrill—aka Clairo—has put to rest any notions of herself being a one-hit-wonder known for making trite bedroom-pop. Her debut unfolds with all the intimacy of a personal diary, handwritten in atmospheric ballads and giddy, electropop bangers that trace her grapplings with love and identity. From the moment she unwraps her glowing vocals on album opener “Alewife,” there’s a lucidity of emotion that pours through her words, carried in the swell of mingling electronics and acoustic strums. Clairo was always wary of the bedroom-pop label—but Immunity steers clear of any of the dullness she might’ve feared.

At times a moody, alt-R&B murmurer navigating drum machines and warbling vocals (“Closer To You”) and other times going full indie-rock with shimmering-riffs and a gilded-in-electronica melody (“North”), Clairo finds a wide-range to play on Immunity. Every song beats with a different energy, hums with new sounds and instrumentals that you can pick out after numerous listens—it’s a phenomenal album you can toss on and let thrum in the background, or let fill your car with its glistening sonics and Clairo’s own glimmering vocalization.

“Bags” shines as a melancholic narrative of a goodbye, moved agonizingly forward its mix of percussion pattering and off-kilter keyboard; while the bubbly “Sofia” is without a doubt Clairo’s best moment on the album. A song about her sexuality, the deeply personal track is a blissful love song made all the more sublime with its galloping drum line and spiraling electronics—overblown and buzzing, then bathed in the golden coo of Clairo’s voice.
