Country songbird Lola Kirke released a video for her most recent tune ‘Mama,’ an intimate musing on the mother daughter relationship. Lola Kirke stars in the video as a high class woman who we see unravel throughout the course of the story.
Lola also announced that her upcoming EP ‘Friends And Foes And Friends Again’ Appropriately titled, the project is a collection of five country duets, divulging Lola’s call toward the style of music that she has connected to her whole life. The new work will surface September 13th, just in time for her 2019 fall tour. Catch Lola Kirke in Los Angeles at the Bootleg Bar on Dec. 19. More tour dates below!
Directed by Lola’s older sister, Jemima Kirke, the video for ‘Mama’ touches on the complexities of a character who lives a life of prestige and stature. The original intention was to star Lola’s mother in the video; after she politely declined, the sisters created a mother figure all their own, played by Lola. We see an aged woman who lives a rich yet delicate life “engaging in an act that puts her on the level with everyone else. And then, the relief (and the horror) that comes from that.” Jemima says of the last scene in the video, where our main character ravenously devours a hamburger.
The cover art for Lola’s upcoming EP “Friends And Foes And Friends Again” says it all. In the style of a 60s magazine graphic strip, the design is a spirited wheel of collaborations with a different drawing for each one. The artwork has about as much personality as Lola, perfectly representing the different expressions on the EP. The featured artists will be Kelly Zutrau, Lilah Larson, Brent Cowles, Austin Jenkins, and Audrey Turner.
