One of the fun things about archaic processes like film is the unpredictability of it. You never truly know what will come out until you develop the film, and any little variable could be the variable that changes how the ideas in your head are etched into reality. There is even something to the act of waiting — planning, then waiting to see what may or may not have happened along the way.
Such is the feeling one gets when listening to ‘Driving Music,’ the latest EP from Brisbane artist Mallrat, who takes inspiration from the ordinary, everyday and mundane bits of life for her new tunes. Mallrat will be in Los Angeles on October 9 with a performance at The Echo!
Like a photographer, Mallrat creates with her music, little slices of life through the things we all go through but rarely talk about or even notice. She mulls over these experiences, giving them time to be developed in unpredictable and unique ways. Sometimes boring and sometimes meaningful, these moments, including new single, “Charlie,” make up ‘Driving Music,’ out Sept. 6.
Mallrat’s new music combines the blissful pop sound of her 2018 EP, but the subject matter is a little more personal and bittersweet. Like film just slightly overexposed to the sun, this additional variable adds an unexpected depth to the artist’s repertoire.
Single “Charlie,” named after the artist’s pet labrador retriever, is the most upbeat tune out of the bunch and is a heartfelt ode to good dogs and good love everywhere. Its sound is saturated in a heavy bubblegum tinge and it has a glittery layering of pop and melodrama that speaks to your former self. It’s young, wistful, a little sad but for no particular reason, and it pairs perfectly with the crisp, unpredictable look of 8mm film, which is what was used to shoot the song’s music video.
Mallrat will be on tour this fall with friend and collaborator Allday. The pair will find themselves in Southern California at the beginning of October with a date at the Constellation Room in Santa Ana on Oct. 8 and a show at The Echo in Los Angeles on Oct. 9.
