Wrapped in the gentle allure of her sleek, acoustic melodies, singer/songwriter Anna Vogelzang finds sweet release on her latest single “Burning Star.” Written after a visiting the Infinity Room art installation by Yayoi Kusama at The Broad in Los Angeles, Vogelzang was electrified by the cosmic-side of the sensory experience she underwent—and while driving up the 110 she found an unlikely pairing in a summer crush anthem with that sense of sublime endlessness.
As the second single off her upcoming seventh studio album Beacon, the new song is a lightning rod for the kind of emotional clarity that seems to weave itself through all of Vogelzang’s creations. It’s light and whimsical but hefted out with all the lyrical poetics of someone totally enraptured by it, “Burning Star” is so much more than just an end-of-summer anthem—it pulses with the kind of inward star-gazing that asks us to acknowledge the kind of wonder we should all share for our own selves.
“This is an empowerment song beneath the guise of a summer crush song. I’d like to think that I’m singing to my own burning star inside of myself, the good in me, and the good in all of us. What if we all had crushes on ourselves? What if we loved ourselves so fully that we wanted to unleash our blinding light, just waiting beneath the surface? What if every time the singer sings, ‘Don’t you want someone to hold, like I want you, baby?’ she’s singing to the best part of herself, worthy of love and encouragement and radiance, instead of some stranger that’s looking fine in a swimsuit at the beach?
