Caroline Polachek

Caroline Polachek has shared the final song from her upcoming solo album Pang with the lofty, acoustically lush “Look At Me Now.” Emphatically imbedded in a chaotic whirl of emotions that Polachek wrangles into an achingly triumphant assertion of identity—in all its messy and self-accepting wonder.

Written at a low point in which Polachek was trying to “find the light-switch in the dark,” seeing isolation on all sides from empty romantic interests and friends, the “Look At Me Now” tracks a hopeful rise from something volatile and destitute into a person self-assured. And in that transformation—or perhaps the realization she had this in her all along—Polachek bends broken images of shipwrecks and hand grenades (her despondent metaphor for herself) along the sublime, euphonious trill of her voice into a crystalline understanding of herself as something so much more than what people can see.

“‘Look At Me Now’ is the ‘diary entry’ of the album. I wrote it last year while processing a mix of guilt, self-destructiveness, and hope,” Polachek says of the song. “I’ve never really worked with [an] acoustic guitar before, and in ‘Look At Me Now’ it’s an umbilical connection to the Lilith-Fair-era artists I grew up listening to, like Jewel and Sarah McLaughlan, who’s wistfully adult lyrics I pretended to understand at the time and now do.”
