Illuminati Hotties have returned with a surprise mixtape featuring twelve new songs from the LA-based poppy-punk band. Led by the kinetic Sarah Tudzin and her decidedly potent rage, FREE I.H: This Is Not The One You’ve Been Waiting For fills the void of the band’s highly anticipated sophomore album—but by all means is a riotously punkish substitute.
Featuring the previously released and blistering “will i get cancelled if i write a song called ‘if you were a man you’d be so cancelled,” the mixtape explodes in a raw clamor of heavy hammer-ons and heady head-bangers (“free ppls,” “WATTBL”).
But big sonics aren’t the sole way Illuminati Hotties tackle all the existential, political, and social angst—all of which the mixtape keeps handily in the background of every song. Songs like “frequent letdown” and “b yr own b” soak up all the band’s poppier musings, saturating both in a lush, 80s pop-rock tint. While the mixtape’s last track, the somber “reasons 2 live” brings to light the undercurrent of intimacy that Illuminati Hotties funnel throughout—offered up in the form of Tudzin’s ached hums.
