After harnessing the mysterious beauty of the desert, Sam Valdez is finally ready to debut a full-length record. The Las Vegas native will release Take Care on May 7th via B3SCI; to get a taste of what’s in store, take a listen to her recent restless single, “Palms Casino.” As Valdez’s first release of the year, it is only the tip of the iceberg. “I started writing this song in 2018 and came back to it while recording my record but reimagined,” shares Valdez in an Instagram post. “It feels good to have it on its way now.”
Something about the dry climate breeds a rare combination of melancholy and fearless curiosity. At least, that’s what one can glean from “Palm Casino”; Valdez opens the track with disbelief. The kick-drum is always there to keep her moving forward, however, as well as the hidden joys of the melodies on guitar. Perhaps the track’s inciting incident was an unwelcome shove from someone she loves, though it is more likely the pull of the world beyond this moment. But as long as the record is still spinning, Valdez can live in the in-between.
