With an insatiable energy and impeccable style, L.A.’s Las Cafeteras pen the catchy new single, “Oaxaca Love Song No2,” a personal love letter to the indigenous culture, food and spirit of Oaxaca, Mexico. Steeped in a rich mix of vintage vibes and modern flair, the single croons with cultural delight as the band playfully shares what they love most about the beautiful Southwestern Mexican state.

Drawing from the wave of 50s Mexican rock n’ roll, “Oaxaca Love Song No2” glides along to a doo-wop rhythm where lead singer and band co-founder Hector Flores chimes in with deep, sultry vocals. Backup singers add to the bouquet of sound as lyrics bear its fruitful bloom. From iconic state dishes, such as quesillo, tlayudas and chilatole to hints at physical seduction, the single submits to an obsession, reverence and love for the Oaxaquena state of mind.
“We wanted to shine light on all the things that make Oaxaca shine for us,” says Flores. “We also wanted to showcase the resiliency of the Oaxacan community and share that they still practice their Native ways and speak their Native languages here in the US, specifically in the state of California, or what they call it, OaxaCalifornia.”
The single also features a music video shot in black and white and inspired by late night tv talk shows that featured musical acts. In the video, Las Cafeteras are brought on stage by a Oaxaqueno host named “Poncho” who introduces the band in Zapoteco, one of the Indigenous languages of Oaxaca and the Zapotec people. The band’s performance incorporates popular dance moves from the 50s and 60s as well as the fashion from that era; each band member dons snazzy suits and fabulous mini dresses as they execute dance moves with the utmost cool. Choreographed by band co-founder Denise Carlos, the music video is bursting with personality and dynamism.
In conjunction with Latinx Heritage month “Oaxaca Love Song No2” is a part of the Oaxaca Love campaign as part of an effort to highlight Oaxacan owned businesses and community organizations in California, with Las Monarca Bakery and other Oaxacan groups throughout the city participating to shed light on the cultural & economic work Oaxaqueños are doing in Los Angeles.
