After years of writing music, releasing singles on her own and garnering the attention of music labels and critics alike, blooming artist UPSAHL has dropped her debut album Lady Jesus, via Arista Records. An alt-pop explosion of attitude, style and grit, the album is full of high voltage energy and insatiable rowdiness.
Lady Jesus is the culmination of years of work for UPSAHL as a songwriter who pens detailed, immersive and narrative lyrics. Her unique storytelling comes to a full crescendo in this new album as she chronicles her personal growth after a bad break up and reflects on some of the negative and superficial behavior she’s experienced and witnessed.
“When I started writing the album, I didn’t know the title, I didn’t know how the story was going to end and I was completely lost,” said UPSAHL. “I was in the studio one day, about halfway through writing the album, and it hit me that I was actually the best I had ever been. I felt like I had gone through a total rebirth without even realizing it was happening. That day, we wrote the song Lady Jesus and everything about this album made sense. I accidentally narrated the emotional rollercoaster that led to me finding my personal “Lady Jesus.” People put so much power and faith in religion and turn to others to save them, but this album is about finding that savior within yourself.”
Whether she’s making a firm pledge to never get wrapped up in emotions again or generally vibing about how much of a whirlwind life can be, UPSAHL injects biting imagery and detail into each song, climbing into the extremity of each feeling or theme to reclaim more of herself. From song-to-song, UPSAHL lets loose her eccentric mind to deal with the ups and downs of life as well as to even the score with people who have wronged her. She does it all with a sense of hyperbole as one extreme situation bleeds into the next, Through it all though, there is a sense of humor, honesty and vindication of the self.
An artist who grew up with a musician father who played in multiple alternative and punk bands and grandparents who were music teachers, UPSAHL has been immersed in music from a young age. First releasing music under her full name at age 14, she garnered attention from her hometown music scene in Phoenix, AZ and after graduating from the Arizona School for the Arts, UPSAHL has proven to be an evolving and talented songwriter and musician. In the last few years, she has collaborated with and written for the likes of Dua Lipa, Madison Beer and most recently with Anne-Marie and Little Mix.
In addition to dropping her debut album with a recent Los Angeles performances at Pico Union Project, UPSAHL will be opening for Olivia O’Brien this fall as they tour across the states with a stop in San Francisco at the Rickshaw Stop on Nov. 30. She will also be performing a special show with Melanie Martinez at the House of Blues in Anaheim on Halloween night.
