Synth-duo Boy Harsher has returned with a bold new project, announcing the release of a film and soundtrack titled The Runner with lead-single “Tower” — An ominous slow-burn delivered via vocalist/lyricist Jae Matthews and producer Augustus Muller’s steady simmer of oscillating synths, crescendoing into a billowing shriek of noise and pain. It’s no surprise that the eerie trappings of “Tower” open The Runner, which will see the result of the band tackling the creation of a short horror film.

The video for “Tower,” with its Lynchian overtones and unnerving slow zoom, materializes a creepy setting for the song in what looks like an old motel room. As the song begins, a ghostly vision of Matthews buzzes on-screen in sickly green hues — even the presence of subtitles on the screen feels uncanny. “Tower,” along with the official trailer for The Runner, promises that the band’s next project is going to be a sufficiently terrifying collision of their absorbing dark pop and their directorial vision as artists.

“We wrote ‘Tower’ several years ago and although it’s evolved over the years, its initial intent remains the same,” the band said of the single. “That feeling of being enveloped, suffocated, entrapped in a relationship, which in turn manifests into reckless attack,” explains Matthews. “What you love the most can make you into a monster. And that’s what this song is about, being a paralyzed fiend.”

Boy Harsher’s new album The Runner is out January 21, 2022, pre-order it here, and the accompanying film for the soundtrack will be screened at the Belasco Theater on February 3 & 4, 2022. Visit the band’s website, Twitter, and Instagram to stay updated on new releases and tour announcements.
