The Soft Moon has released a new video for his single “Become The Lies” off his forthcoming album Exister out on September 23, you also have a chance to catch him on tour at The Regent Theater in Los Angeles on November 25. This is the second single multi-instrumentalist Luis Vasquez has shared from Exister and just like the last one, “Become The Lies” shows just how potent his dark wave soundscapes can be.

Channeling all of his deepest inspirations, from Joy Division to frantic post-punk, The Soft Moon conjures melodic bliss out of industrial-sized discord. Grinding electronica, oscillating crashes, and whining riffs are all held together by Vazquez’s angelic croons. Which echo like a beaming bit of light through the severe atmospherics that explodes on “Become The Lies.”

Like many of the songs that will appear on Exister, the album’s second single deals with the heavy despair that follows discovering your family is lying to you. On “Become The Lies,” his exhausting and passionate struggle with guilt and shame plays out in everything from his incisive lyrics to its pummeling sonics.

The music video for he single, directed by Wiggy, doesn’t try to contain that anxious energy of “Become The Lies.” Embracing its innate kineticism the video sees Vazquez stomping and kicking away as a silhouette on stain-glass, pacing inside a golden hour lit bedroom, and smacking the absolute hell out of a couch cushion. The entire video becomes a visual conduit for the kind of heart-racing catharsis that’s ignited by The Soft Moon’s music.

“I had an identity crisis after discovering dark secrets about my family’s past. This happened while I was writing the album and it destroyed me. ‘Become The Lies’ expresses how everything I thought I knew about my life was untrue. Lies, shame, and guilt have been recurring themes in my music. I explored it in Criminal, but during the writing process of Exister, I became more self-aware and finally understood that I was never the liar in the story. I wanted to dance in the video to contrast with the lack of control I felt over my life at that moment. It’s my way of shaking off the bad stuff. It’s also an escape from the seriousness of this song.”
