Caroline Polachek is back with another enigmatic pop banger with the release of her latest single “Welcome To My Island,” out of which comes the announcements of her next album Desire, I Want To Turn Into You which arrives Feb. 14, 2023. It’s the fourth song that she’s shared to come from the upcoming project, which includes last year’s “Bunny Is A Rider” and recent singles “Billions” and “Sunset.” And as par the course for Polachek at this point she continues to revamp her experimental pop sound with every new release — and her latest is no different.

On “Welcome To My Island,” she mingles her stratospheric vocals with heavy industrial electronics, piecing together a gripping love song. And it wouldn’t be a Polachek song if she didn’t offer up the kind of tempo switch-ups her songs are known to contain. In between her droningly mechanical vocalizations, she inserts her characteristically angelic cries — flinging her euphonious voice through a refrain from which the album gets its name.

And that right there would be enough to make the track a verifiable banger. But then in between verses, Polachek dives into this rapid-fire, dizzying delivery that bounces on the back of the song’s heady bass. Across its ecstatic melodies and vocals “Welcome To My Island” fluctuates between two extremes: a desire for euphoria and the trappings of one’s own ego that leads to it.

But it’s also a thrilling introduction to the new sonic world that Polachek has been building around her sophomore album. If previous singles like the fiery bop “Bunny Is A Rider” and smoldering dance track “Sunset” are anything to go by, Desire, I Want To Turn Into You is going to be an album that obsesses over both Polachek’s engrossing pop phenomenon and her ability to create heavenly sensual tracks.
