Tennis

Tennis is back with the second single from their highly anticipated sixth album Pollen, sharing the newest track “Let’s Make a Mistake Tonight” and announcing a colossal tour as well. Like the first single “One Night with the Valet,” each new preview of their upcoming album conjures up a gleaming and glittery vision of sleek melodies gliding over lush romance. They’ll be playing at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles, along with stops at the Fox Theater in Oakland, the Crystal Ballroom in Portland, and the Beacon Theatre in New York.

“Let’s Make a Mistake Tonight” is filled with all the groovy staples of the duo couple Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley. From the shimmer of thrilling synths and vibrant percussion to its nostalgia-saturated production. Throw in Moore’s soul-gladdening vocals which saunter in and out like aural beams of light and you have a song that just radiates with Tennis’ overwhelming spirit. Though it wouldn’t be exactly complete without gushing intensely over one’s lover or recognizing the kind of euphoric strength that’s provided by them.

“‘Let’s Make a Mistake Tonight’ is all hubris, attitude, and wish fulfillment. I’m turning water into wine,” Tennis said of the single. “I’m reshaping my reality through projection or denial. While tracking with Patrick I kept envisioning the same scene: I’m in the passenger’s seat. Patrick drives with one hand on the wheel and one on my thigh. This song plays us out.”

The music video for “Let’s Make a Mistake Tonight,” directed by the band themselves, sees them performing the track in a characteristically spectacular fashion. As it opens with Moore glistening in a reflective dress the scene begins to cut to a variety of visually engrossing and retro set pieces.

There are those slow fades that leave a ghostly image of Moore dancing over a close-up of her face or the many floating keyboards (and a giant glowing one) that they start flourishing on. And that spiraling disco finish with its delirium of singed guitar riffs is absolutely impossible to shake.
